Language Arts
Students will explore story and text; strategies and processes; and language features, structures, and conventions In addition, students will explore the following curricular competencies:
Some of the various writing activities your child will complete this year are: descriptive writing, story creation, informational writing, paragraph writing, poetry creation, projects, journaling, persuasive writing, essay writing, and more. Over the course of the year, students will use the steps in the writing process to revise and edit his/her writing. Some of the various reading activities this year are: novel study, literature circles, short stories, fiction and non-fiction reading, current event, read aloud, guided reading, and curriculum related reading. Students will participate in a variety of oral presentations and activities throughout the year in different areas of the curriculum. Social Studies Areas of study this year:

Students will be engaged in a variety of inquiry units, assignments, tests, and projects throughout the year related to these topics. Arts Education Drama, visual arts, music and dance will be incorporated into various areas of the curriculum throughout the year. Please check the What We're Doing section for more current information. Physical Education Students will be assessed on a combination of areas such as: - fair play, leadership, and safety - developing and applying movement concepts and strategies - developing, refining, and applying movement skills (technique) - regular participation in a variety of activites - connection and influence on health and fitness It is expected that students wear exercise clothing for PE (shorts, track pants, t-shirt, runners). Students are encouraged to keep their PE clothing in a bag on their hook. Health Education Topics this year: - influences on eating habits - influences on healthy choices and health effects - personal health goals - practices to reduce the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections and life-threatening communicable diseases - sources of health information - basic principles for responding to emergencies - strategies to protect from potential abuse, exploitation, and harm in a variety of settings - consequences of bullying, stereotyping and discrimination - signs and symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression - influences of physical, emotional, and social changes on identities and relationships |
Math
Math topics for this year:
* Students are encouraged to use a calculator for most of their homework. The emphasis in math this year is on concept development. It is recommended that students have a calculator both at home and at school. A notice about this will go home early in the school year. Each week students will have a short quiz or test to check their understanding of the math concepts learned throughout the week. In the Math Makes Sense textbook, the answers are located in the back of the book. Please feel free to use these answers to help guide and check if students are on the right track. Career Education The focus this year is on:
French The focus this year will be on language development. Students will participate in a variety of written and oral activities related to various topics. Students will see receive French instruction two times each week by Madame Todd. Please contact her directly regarding your child and French. Applied Design, Skills, and Technology As a new addition to the curriculum, students will engage in 3 modules of Applied Design, Skills, and Technology over the course of the year. More information will come later as the grade 6 and 7 teachers need to work together to develop this new curriculum at Capilano. Units of Inquiry As our ninth year of IB begins, students will be participating in a variety of Units of Inquiry which will incorporate various pieces of the curriculum.
